    Dr. Shah is the medical director and founder of the Vascular Institute of Virginia, LLC. He is a Board-Certified Nephrologist with a special focus in Vascular & Interventional Nephrology. He has dedicated his career to the care of patients with vascular disease, particularly in an outpatient setting. Dr. Shah specializes in all aspects of Hemodialysis Vascular Access. In addition, Dr. Shah has a special interest in lower extremity limb salvage, arterial & venous disease and wound care. Dr. Shah has worked in outpatient-based vascular labs (OBLs) since 2003 and he has been actively involved in ownership and management of OBLs since 2006. Dr. Shah is credentialed by the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology. Formerly he was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine (previously known as Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University) in the Division of Nephrology. He was active in the education of Nephrology Fellows, Residents, and Medical Students. Dr. Shah completed his Internship in Internal Medicine 1999, Residency in Internal Medicine in 2001 and then his Fellowship in Nephrology in 2003 all from MCP Hahnemann University (Drexel) in Philadelphia, PA. He holds active Medical Licenses in Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, District of Columbia and California.

    Dr. William Yu is a Board-Certified lnterventional Nephrologist at the Vascular Institute of Virginia. He specializes in dialysis access and has a passion for caring for patients with End Stage Renal Disease. Dr. William Yu was one of the first lnterventional Nephrologists certified in Hemodialysis Vascular Access Procedures by the American Society of Diagnostic and lnterventional Nephrology (ASDIN). Dr. William Yu graduated from Boston University School of Medicine in 1994 as part of the 6-year combined B.A./M.D. program, from which he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency in 1997 and his Nephrology Fellowship in 1999 both at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago. He is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology. Since 2001, Dr. Yu has specialized in all aspects of hemodialysis vascular access. And while being in private practice, Dr. Yu was active in teaching and had a part-time academic position at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine from 2000-2005. Furthermore, Dr. Yu was awarded the "Faculty Teacher Award" in 2001 by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Sinai Hospital Program in Internal Medicine. Dr. Yu practiced in the Baltimore area for over 6 years and then in Prince George's County, MD, and Washington, DC. for the last 13 years. Dr. Yu has worked in outpatient-based vascular labs (OBLs) since 2001 and has been actively involved in the management of OBLs since 2006.   • Dr. Naren Gupta

    Vascular & Interventional Surgeon

    Dr. Naren Gupta completed his surgical internship and earned a PhD (with Distinction) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his General Surgery residency at the University of Virginia, and went on to advanced training in Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at Emory University. His research in antibiotics usage to prevent infections after surgery, the role of nutrition in disease, and stroke prevention by carotid surgery and stenting won national awards and is widely published. He is Board Certified in both General and Vascular Surgery. After completing his training, Dr. Gupta joined the faculty of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital at VA Boston and was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School for 6 years. His expertise in the advanced use of stents and minimally invasive interventional techniques in the treatment of aneurysms, carotid disease, venous disease, blood clots and PAD significantly advanced the vascular surgery care of our nation’s veterans. Dr. Gupta’s innovative, patient-centered multi-disciplinary approach to reducing stroke was awarded the prestigious Young Clinician’s Award by CIMIT, a consortium of Harvard, MIT and the US Department of Defense. Dr. Gupta has worked with FEMA, the Department of Homeland Security and the White House Medical Unit to provide surgical care during the G-8 Summit and disaster relief services after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. During Operation Enduring Freedom, he provided services as a Distinguished Visiting Surgeon at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany to care for acutely injured US and NATO warfighters flown in from Afghanistan and Iraq. Dr. Gupta believes that surgeons have a duty to serve their patients with heartfelt empathy. His greatest honor was to receive the Golden Heart Award twice for outstanding compassion in veteran care. Dr. Gupta brings this combination of cutting-edge surgical and endovascular expertise and empathetic, patient-centered service to VIV in offering care for the entire breadth of vascular surgery problems. He is dual Board Certified in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery and has active licenses in 8 states.
